The History
European Cup - Traditionally the cup contested by the champions of all UEFA countries. Recently the traditional knock-out-format has been replaced by a league structure during some stage of the competition, in order to guarantee the "big teams" more matches and the UEFA more (TV) money. Big clubs are also given an income safety net where by losers of the last qualifying round enter the UEFA Cup.
Uefa Cup - Introduced as successor of the Fairs Cup in 1971, basically entered by teams finishing on the places just below the champions (and possibly cup winners), though for some countries also the winners of so-called League Cups have been allowed to enter. Allocation of number of places per country based on performances of teams from the country over five previous seasons; every country is guaranteed one entry, the best three countries can enter up to four teams. It was traditionally contested by 64 teams, but partially due to the appearance of new countries on the map of Europe, UEFA increased the number of entrants, adding additional qualifying rounds. Starting with the 2004/05 season, a group phase will be included in the tournament.
Fairs Cup - Originally set up as a competition for cities where international fairs were held and unrelated to final placings in national competitions (two traditional Dutch participants were D.O.S. of Utrecht and D.W.S. of Amsterdam, both rather insignificant in the league). The first few cups also saw the entry of several "city" teams, usually consisting of players of the better clubs of that city (Copenhagen for instance), some actually club teams. In the last three years known as "Runners Up Cup", with the participating teams already related to placings in domestic leagues. In 1971 replaced by the UEFA Cup.
Cup Winners Cup - Contested by the Cup winners of the UEFA nations (or losing cup finalists if the cup winner of a country already qualified for the Champions Cup). Several UEFA countries did not start a serious cup competition until after the introduction of this cup. The 1998/99 edition was the last one; since 1999/2000 domestic cup winners enter the UEFA Cup
